This week we have be learning all about Chinese New Year. We listened to the story of The Great Race, and recognised the different animals who appeared in the race. We then put the animals in order and learnt that this is the order of the Chinese New Year. We found out that last year was the year of the Dragon, so this year is the year of the Snake. We learnt about different ways that Chinese New Year is celebrated, including spring cleaning their houses and then decorating their houses.
We made our own Chinese lanterns, explored the race using small world and explored our Chinese restaurant, learning about the different foods. Our favourite part of the week was creating our own dragon dance in our PE lesson. We watched some children perform their own dragon dance and talk about the different ways the dragon moved. We talked about what instruments we could hear in the music and how we could move to the beat. We each got to be the head of the dragon controlling how the rest of the dragon moved. We decided to move around high and low, slow and wiggly.
In maths we continued to learn more about the number 4 and the composition of it e.g. 0 and 4, 1 and 3, 2 and 2, 3 and 1, 4 and 0. In phonics we continued to learn more about alliteration and group all of the objects that had the same initial sound.
