Year 1 Latest News- Spring 1 Week 2

We began our week with Gymnastics in the hall. The children revisited some of the shapes they have learnt so far and then applied these when using the large apparatus. The children enjoyed playing a game of ‘hide’. They had to move around the space using different shapes and movements and when the teacher called “Hide!” the children had to hide behind/under/beside the apparatus and remain very quiet and still!

In English, we continued reading our focus text ‘Stanley’s Stick’. We thought about Stanley’s feelings throughout different parts of the story and learnt what the word ‘plot’ means in a story. Later in the week the children created their own mini booklets for Stanley’s Stick and wrote a sequence of sentences.

In Maths, the children began using comparative language in the context of length, height, mass and time (speed). They enjoyed comparing a variety of objects around the classroom and worked with their peers to order objects from lightest to heaviest and shortest to longest.

The children enjoyed learning a new skill in Art this week. We looked at the work of the famous artist Vincent Van Goph and in particular his landscapes. The children noticed the light and dark details in his landscapes and had a go and shading with a sketching pencil.
