Reception Latest News Autumn Week 5

We began this week with a walk through our woodland area, using our senses to explore the world around us. We saw tall trees, badger setts, a secret den and even a dragon! We talked about what we could see, hear and smell, from rustling leaves to the fresh, earthy woodland air. Later in the week, we returned to the woods to focus on our sense of touch. The children described textures such as the bumpy bark of the trees and the soggy leaves on the ground.

We also observed the seasonal changes of autumn, noticing the leaves that had fallen, as well as spotting sycamore seeds and acorns. We learned that while some trees lose their leaves, others are evergreen and stay the same all year round.

In phonics, we have recapped all the phonemes we’ve learned so far and practised blending the sounds together to read simple words. We also focused on practising the correct letter formation for the graphemes g, o, c, and k. The children focused on holding their pencil with the correct grip and said the handwriting rhymes aloud to support accurate formation of each letter.

In maths, we explored different ways to make the number four using objects, actions, and pictures.

We ended our week by learning our autumn song, “All the Leaves Are Falling Down”, which the children loved singing together.
